What do I cover?
Things your viewers use the most. News about Facebook, malware, privacy, e-mail and what their kids are doing online everyday. I also demo the latest gadgets, smartphones, show ways to save and make money online, and every Friday “The App of the Day” segment features a new app.
The stories are produced same day so they’re always relevant. Stories the network morning shows will have, a day later.
How many stories do you do?
Like your other reporters I produce a story every weekday. 5 stories a week, 260 packages and web stories every year. Web stories are written specifically for the web; no copy and paste of the package script. Web stories also include more information than the packages so you can push viewers to your website for additional content.
How are they different than the stories we get on the feed?
They look local. Stations airing the franchise treat me as part of their team. To viewers it appears that I’m working out of their newsroom. Stations get a custom-outcue and I frequently cut outcues, promos and other content that make the segment appear locally produced.
How do we get the stories?
Story pitches are posted online every morning before the morning meeting. Producers can go back to the site later in the day to get the package, script for close-captioning, anchor intros, tag and web story. Packages are available for download every afternoon.
What stations are airing ‘What the Tech?’?
At this moment, the tech segment is airing in newscasts on:
- WKRN Nashville, TN
- WAAY Huntsville, AL
- WPSD Paducah, KY
- KFDX Wichita Falls, TX
- WRCB Chattanooga, TN
- WZVN Ft. Myers FL
- KOHD Bend, OR
- WBOC Salisbury, MD
Is the segment market exclusive?
Isn’t this like Consumer Reports or Bloomberg syndicated segments?
No and please don’t think of it that way. They look nothing like syndicated reports.
Why do you think my station has money to do this?
It’s more affordable than you might think. Several stations have room for it in their budget, others chose to sell it to a sponsor and another is doing a barter with me.
Of stations finding sponsors one sold it to Mt. Dew 6 years ago and renews it every year. Another sold it to a local home improvement company and another got a local mattress company to sponsor it.
How much does it cost?
There are a few ways to answer this question. The short one is to give me a call. I price the packages based on your market size.
And I need a technology segment….why?
Because it’s what everyone cares about. Viewers spend the majority of their time online and they spend a tremendous amount of money on gadgets and computers. They want to know what’s cool, what’s dangerous, what their kids are doing online and how to protect their things. No matter where they live, no matter their age, no matter their income and no matter what they do for a living. They share one thing: an interest in consumer technology.
News departments cover what affects their viewers lives.
And because the competition isn’t doing it yet.
